Hana World Austin: A Beloved Asian Market Says Goodbye After Two Decades
After more than two decades serving Austin’s Asian community, Hana World Market is closing at the end of the year. What began as New Oriental Market in the early 2000s grew into a beloved cultural hub where families, students, and immigrants found the ingredients — and comfort — that reminded them of home.
Rising operating costs, inflation, and increasing expenses made it impossible for the family to keep the store open. And in the middle of preparing for closure, a devastating act of vandalism — someone cutting the refrigeration lines — caused thousands in unexpected losses and emotional strain.
In response, the ATX Asian Food community immediately came together with memories, photos, and messages of support. To help the family navigate these final months and support their employees, a GoFundMe has been launched by community members Rebecca Le Founder of the ATX Asian Food Community and The Honest Foodist and Nelson Lin of Soupleaf Hot Pot.
If Hana World has ever been part of your Austin story, you can help by donating or sharing the GoFundMe, visiting while the store remains open, or sharing your memories. Every gesture reminds this family how deeply they’ve shaped Austin’s Asian food landscape.

DAM-A Hot Pot & BBQ AYCE – Korean BBQ & Hot Pot in Austin
Sunhee’s journey from washing dishes to owning two beloved Austin restaurants is one of the most inspiring stories in the city’s Asian food community. After arriving from Korea in 2002, she worked her way up at O’daku Sushi — learning every part of the restaurant, from the kitchen to the dining room. Her passion for sharing food, shaped by years of cooking alongside her mother-in-law, set the foundation for her future.
In 2008, Sunhee took over O’daku Sushi, strengthening it into a neighborhood favorite. By 2015, she expanded her dream further by purchasing Chosun Galbi and transforming it into DAM-A Hot Pot & BBQ AYCE, known today for its authentic Korean BBQ, hearty hot pot, and warm hospitality. She later revitalized O’daku with a modern sushi and noodle bar, allowing guests to customize their meals with fresh ingredients.
From humble beginnings to building two thriving restaurants, Sunhee’s story is anchored in perseverance, community, and a genuine love for feeding people. DAM-A and O’daku remain pillars of Austin’s Asian dining scene — places where families, friends, and couples can always expect quality, heart, and unforgettable meals.
